Exclusive On-Set Interview: Amber Marshall Talks Season 17 of 'Heartland', Grief, and Hope

Amber Marshall Opens Up About ‘Heartland’, Loss and New Love
Fans of Heartland have watched Amber Marshall grow up on screen. Now 35, she's played Amy Fleming for over 15 years and more than 250 episodes. With Season 17 now filming, the beloved Canadian series continues to thrive.
Based on Lauren Brooke’s bestselling novels, Heartland follows the Bartlett-Fleming family as they navigate life on a horse ranch in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta. But behind the idyllic setting lies a deeply human story—and for Marshall, it’s personal.
A Set That Feels Like Home
"We really have become quite a family," Marshall says of the cast and crew. "We’re playing a family on TV, but it’s not just acting—after so many years together, it’s real."
That closeness was tested last fall when co-star Robert Cormier—who played Amy’s new love interest, Finn Cotter—tragically passed away after a fall.
"It was devastating," she says, her voice softening. "It really made all of us stop and think about the people in our lives. None of this is guaranteed."
Growing With Amy
Few actors get to grow up with their characters, but Marshall treasures that rare gift. "Playing Amy this long lets me evolve with her. There’s history in every scene because we’ve all lived it—both on and off camera."
The show’s long run has helped deepen those connections. "That’s the beauty of a series with this kind of longevity. You don’t have to rush development. You see the changes, the struggles, the healing—all unfold naturally."
Loss and the Future of Amy’s Heart
Cormier’s death also left a void in the storyline. His character Finn had been introduced as a romantic prospect following the heartbreaking departure of Ty Borden (played by Graham Wardle), Amy’s late husband.
Fans wondered if Amy would find love again—and with Finn, it seemed possible. "That whole storyline was cut short," Marshall reflects. "It left a lot of people—including us—with unanswered questions."
Season 16 brought a new face into Amy’s world: Sam Langston, played by Shawn Roberts. Could he be Amy’s next chapter?
Marshall won’t say for sure, but she hints at possibilities. "It’s about leaving space for curiosity. Viewers don’t always need a clear path. Just like real life, things can shift unexpectedly."
Why Families Keep Watching
Marshall believes Heartland’s success lies in its simplicity. "People want shows they can watch together. That’s rare now. I hear stories about grandparents bonding with grandkids over our episodes—it brings families together."
The show’s values—kindness, resilience, connection—feel more important than ever. "In a time when we’re all buried in devices, Heartland lets people slow down and reconnect."
No Plans to Say Goodbye
With so much change behind and ahead, is Marshall ready to hang up Amy’s cowboy hat?
"Not at all," she says with a smile. "This show fits my life perfectly. I live in Alberta. I love the outdoors. I couldn’t imagine a better job. As long as they’ll have me—and as long as fans keep watching—I’ll be here."
